How do I know if a cosmetic surgery is right for me?
Three things must be kept in mind; your current state of health and medical history, desired outcome, and the motivation behind your decision. The best cosmetic surgery candidate is someone with realistic expectations and an understanding of the limitations set by medicine, technology, and each patient's own body.
Who is a good candidate for cosmetic surgery and who is not?
In general, nonsmokers who are in good overall health and are currently at a healthy body weight are good candidates for cosmetic surgery. Those who suffer from serious health problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, a bleeding disorder, heart disease or depression should not consider cosmetic surgery.
What is the recovery from cosmetic surgery like?
Your surgeon will prescribe the appropriate pain medications to help minimize any discomfort. In general, most facial cosmetic surgeries have minimal discomfort post-operatively. Liposuction is slightly more uncomfortable, and procedures that require elevation or tightening of the muscles-such as an abdominoplasty or breast augmentation can cause discomfort equal to a C-section.
What are the possible risks of cosmetic surgeries?
There are risks associated with any surgical procedures. Find out what they are, how often they occur and how they will be handled if they do occur. If the doctor does not openly discuss the risks or admit that there are always risks, seek another opinion.
Is there any right age to have cosmetic surgery?
There’s no “right age” for cosmetic surgery. Treatments such as breast augmentation, liposuction, nose jobs and dermabrasion tend to be more common for younger patients, while older patients may be more likely to seek procedures such as an eyelid lift, brow lift, facelift or neck lift.

How often would I need to repeat the Botox® or Restylane injections?
Botox® lasts about three to four months, and the treatment can be repeated as needed. When it wears off, you will begin to notice increased muscle action and some appearance of the wrinkles. It is noted that with repeated use, the effect of Botox® becomes longer lasting. Restylane® injections last for about six months, and can also be repeated as needed.
How do I know what size breast implant is right for me?
The decision is based on a number of factors, including the patient's desires, reasons for the surgery and overall health. You may feel your breasts are too small or you may be unhappy with the size and firmness of your breasts following pregnancy, breastfeeding or major weight loss. Also, unevenness between the breasts can also be a motivating factor. Your surgeon can help you make the right decision during your pre-surgical appointment.
What is tumescent liposuction?
Tumescent liposuction is a technique that uses a large volume of dilute epinephrine to cause intense constriction of the small blood vessels, which leads to less bleeding, less bruising, less swelling and a quicker recovery compared to traditional methods.
Is there anything to do to minimize swelling or bruising?
It is advisable to sleep in a reclining (not horizontal) position for one week following surgery to minimize the collection of fluids in the face and eyelids. Follow the instructions given about making and administering your cold and warm compresses. These will not only reduce bruising and swelling, but they will also maximize and promote healing.
Will there be any scarring?
Scarring will occur when ever an incision is made and the severity of the scarring varies from person to person. Most incisions are made in areas that will not show, like under undergarments or along natural creases and the scars will normally fade over time. Your surgeon will address this in more detail at the time of your consultation.
What if there are complications?
Special care always is taken to avoid complications, but unfortunately, they can occur. Your surgeon should be able to detect any problems at a very early stage. Should a complication arise, our surgeon will make every effort to limit and correct its effects.
Can several cosmetic surgery procedures be performed at the same time?
There are several important variables that must be considered before deciding to combine surgeries. As with all patients, decisions of this nature are always made on a case-by-case basis. Combining surgeries can save time and money and may be an option for you. However, do not assume this will always be the case.
How long does it take to recover from my cosmetic surgery procedure?
Recovery times will vary depending upon the procedure and the patient. Rest and limited activity are very important to speed healing and reduce recovery time. Regardless of the procedure, it is very important to follow the specific post-operative instructions provided by your doctor.
How do I ensure that I have a safe cosmetic surgery procedure?
Our medical staff is highly trained and has many hours of surgical experience. But it is essential to follow all your pre- and post-operative instructions exactly. You should also thoroughly discuss any and all medical conditions with us before your procedure. This is the best way to ensure a smooth surgery and recovery process.
What are the do’s and don’ts before any cosmetic surgery?
To get the best possible surgical results:
Stop taking any over-the-counter supplements, such as vitamins, minerals and herbal products, seven days prior to surgery. Quit smoking at least six weeks before your surgery to avoid healing problems and serious medical complications during your recovery.
You may have to discontinue taking aspirin or drugs with anticoagulation properties, as they can cause unnecessary bleeding during surgery.
If you come down with a cold or fever, or experience an infection or injury, contact our office immediately to reschedule your procedure and minimize the risk of surgical complications.
Do you have less invasive options to improve my appearance?
Yes! We have injectable dermal fillers that can plump lips and cheeks, smooth out wrinkles and fine lines and restore a more youthful overall appearance. While the results from these products aren’t permanent, they are long-lasting, and unlike surgery, they require no recovery time.
